Route details
The start of the Rome Marathon 2026 takes place on the legendary Via dei Fori Imperiali, right in the heart of Rome’s historic center, between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. This monumental setting immediately sets the tone for a unique course through the centuries. From the very first metres, runners skirt the ruins of the Roman Forum, treading cobblestones steeped in history, and already feel the fervour of the public who have flocked to this mythical event. The adrenalin rush is palpable from the very first kilometers, such is the grandeur of the setting.
The route soon takes participants westward across the Tiber into Trastevere, Rome’s popular bohemian quarter. Here, the narrow streets, colorful facades and typical liveliness create a warmer, more intimate atmosphere. Away from the great monuments, this passage allows you to discover another facet of the city: more authentic, livelier, but still imbued with culture. This segment, with its Mediterranean charm, is punctuated by the cheers of the locals and the smells of coffee wafting from the terraces.
Back on the broad banks of the Tiber, runners enjoy a more rolling passage, with views of ancient bridges, domes and majestic facades. The race then passes Castel Sant’Angelo, an impressive riverside fortress, and continues along Via della Conciliazione towards St. Peter’s Basilica, in the heart of the Vatican. This highlight of the Roman marathon combines emotion, spirituality and admiration for one of the world’s greatest works of architecture. The silence of some runners speaks volumes about the power of this passage.
As the kilometers go by, the Rome Marathon course continues to reveal the city’s jewels. Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo, baroque fountains, cobbled streets… every stride is a cinematic immersion. Even if your legs get heavy, your eyes never cease to wonder. The alternation between wide avenues, small historic streets and pedestrian walkways gives the race a rhythm, while maintaining a constant visual intensity. It’s a demanding marathon, but an exciting one.
The last few kilometers bring the riders back to the ancient area, where concentration becomes paramount. The finish line approaches, once again skirting the forums and remains of imperial Rome. But it’s no longer the Colosseum that marks the end of the route. It’s the Circo Massimo, a former chariot-racing stadium, which hosts the finish. This huge open space, steeped in history and emotion, is the perfect place to bring this marathon in Rome to a close. Runners cross the finish line to the cheers and applause of the public, in a festive atmosphere both ancient and contemporary. Finishing a marathon in a place as symbolic as the Circo Massimo gives the experience an almost mythological dimension.
To take part in the Rome Marathon is to experience a journey through 42 km of heritage, passion, physical challenge and emotional intensity. Few races in the world can offer such a balance between sporting effort and timeless beauty.

Bib number collection and pasta party:
Bib numbers and runner packs can be collected from the marathon expo, a trade fair dedicated to running.
